Dear Premier Wall, I am writing to express my concern about the impact the cuts in K-12 education will have on students across the province. Our children's right to a quality education, especially children with diverse needs, should be a greater priority than balancing budgets. Every student deserves access to the classroom support he or she needs. I am asking that your government ensure all school divisions have adequate funding levels to meet student needs and to keep up with the pace of inflation. Furthermore, many frontline education workers, especially support workers, are already some of the lowest paid in the public sector. Asking them to take a 3.5 per cent rollback or nine unpaid days off on top of their already low wages is unfair. In addition, I am concerned about the impact Bill 63 will have on local school divisions and their ability to make the decisions that are best for our communities. This bill places all decision making power in the hands of the Minister of Education and ignores thousands of people who spoke out in favour of locally elected and autonomous school boards during the consultation period about the restructuring of education divisions. This bill ignores the will of the public and is being pushed through quickly and with no public consultation. I urge the government to stop Bill 63 and restore funding to school divisions.
